Costa Rica puts brakes on popular stem cell tourism (Reuters)

Posted on June 9th, 2010 in Science

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (Reuters) –
Costa Rica is cracking down on an unauthorized stem cell clinic that has attracted hundreds of foreigners seeking relief from degenerative diseases and serious injuries.

Better known for its idyllic tropical beaches and lush cloud forests, Costa Rica’s many hospitals and clinics have made medical tourism one of the fastest growing segments of its tourism sector, the motor of its economy.

They lure tens of thousands of foreigners seeking surgery, dental work, cancer treatment, cosmetic surgery, and dozens of other procedures at a fraction of their cost in the United States.

EU to allow nations to ban approved GM crops (AFP)

Posted on June 9th, 2010 in Science

BRUSSELS (AFP) –
Individual EU nations will be free to ban genetically modified crops, even if they are deemed safe and approved, under rule changes being drawn up by Brussels to unblock the clearance process.

EU Health Commissioner John Dalli, in charge of the emotive dossier, will hand over plans to national capitals and the EU parliament for their consideration next month, Green groups and Brussels sources said on Friday following a series of briefings.

GMO supporters cite the benefits of growing crops with higher yields, more resistance to pests and disease, and requiring less fertiliser and pesticide.

About 400 patients, mostly foreigners from the United States, have been treated at the Institute of Cellular Medicine in San Jose for multiple sclerosis, arthritis, spinal injuries and other illnesses.

“This isn’t allowed in any serious country in the world,” Health Minister Maria Luisa Avila said in a telephone interview.

The Health Ministry several weeks ago ordered the clinic, owned by Arizona entrepreneur Neil Riordan,

Long-Necked Dinosaurs Held Heads High (LiveScience.com)

Posted on June 9th, 2010 in Science

The long necks of the largest dinosaurs that ever lived
might have been raised high after all, a new study now suggests.

The sauropod dinosaurs, which included titans such as Brachiosaurus, Diplodocus,
and Apatosaurus (once known as Brontosaurus), are well-known for
the very long necks they usually sported.
The lengthy neck extended the animal’s reach for grabbing food.

However, it has recently proven controversial as to whether
sauropods actually ever held their heads up high to dine on hard-to-reach
leaves because of all the energy needed to pump blood to such heights.
