Serbia needed to come from this match with something if they hoped to have any chance of advancing. They had to get at least a draw against Germany since they already lost to Ghana or their chances of advancing would likely be gone. Serbia is not a terrible squad as they’re ranked 15th in the world but after the loss against Ghana they had to get something from the Germany competition. It won’t be simple against a Germany squad that is well balanced led by Phil Lahm, Lukas Podolski and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
This was the competition that Serbia had been waiting for and they definitely generated results. Serbia were not as concentrated as they should have been on Ghana, and may have been looking ahead to this match. Serbia has the defense that can hold Germany. Serbia’s got Nemanja Vidic, Branislav Ivanovic, Aleksandar Lukovic and Aleksandar Kolarov. Serbia had to hold down Podolski and Miroslav Klose if they wanted to win. Serbia is aware that they must play pretty well to defeat a German squad that is pretty talented.
And they not only managed to hold the German squad down, they won. Enthusiasts were declaring that Germany was going to blow away the contest from then out after the Germans beat Australia in a dramatic 4-1 score. But Serbia just couldn’t afford to let that transpire. And possibly Germany was feeling a little too self-assured after their victory and Serbia’s loss. Either way, the Serbian squad was pretty obstinate and tenacious and Germany just did not rally adequately. Serbia, who won their winning point 35 minutes into the game, won in a 1-0 victory. The game was packed with yellow cards and puzzling judgements from the Spanish referee, Alberto Undiano Mallenco, and that likely played no modest part in affecting the result of the game also.
This competition was broadcast on ESPN but keep in mind it started pretty early on Friday morning at 7:30 AM Eastern time, as many of the games in the World Cup have. It was likely worth seeing though as Serbia is in must-win mode against a very talented Germany squad that is expected to win Group D.
