This beautifully illustrated book is intended to show the future star how the game is played at the top levels. The book includes quite a bit of commentary on the game, including tips on cloths, rackets, tactics, and how practice reallly does make your game improve. It is intended to not take the place of a personal coach, but to be of help to the starting player.

The exercises and pointers given by the Williams sisters will get you started if you don't have a coach, and will provide questions to ask him, and support for his answers if you do. The book is aimed at the 8 or 9 year old up to perhaps the 12 or 13 year old. It's written at a level that they will understand, and appreciate.

After our family spent many hours watching Wimbledon earlier this year, my 8-year-old daughter started showing interest in the sport. Now that she's got this beautiful book by Venus and Serena Williams, she is HOOKED. Every day she begs me to take her to our local courts so that she can practice her swings. She's got a long way to go, but at least she's spending her last few days of summer 1. reading and 2. being active. Recommended!

well, if you're thinking of buying this, then you've probably already seen this & possibly still have it on your DVR. the whole game aired by ESPN is here, minus commercial breaks, plus some postgame coverage as well. one gripe some people might have is that it's fairly auburn-biased, and the front cover certainly is a tip-off to that. i know auburn won, but oregon fans sitting on the fence might be reluctant to buy the DVD for that reason. another small gripe is that some alternate audio broadcast tracks (particularily the auburn & oregon radio networks) would've been a nice feature. be that as it may, it's a worthy enough purchase for the price.....

Just a few comments in the realm of things you didn't notice the first time:

*that field was one of the key story lines in the game. Again and again, from the opening kickoff, players would slip and slide. It was dangerous at times and surely cut down on the explosiveness of the game. There was never an adequate explanation as to what was going on, but it wasn't a field suitable for a championship game.

*being blunt here, neither QB put up a very good game. Newton played perhaps his worst game of the entire year, off-target on many throws and missing open receivers, including a couple for easy touchdowns. It seemed like the vast majority of his throws were the 1 yard sideline variety too, and you could tell he was hurt. Course, the Oregon QB had a far worse game, in part because he was getting clocked every so often, but his accuracy was terrible. You had to figure the long layoff really impacted both players.

*it is a miracle and a testament to how good Oregon was that they were even in a position to win the game. You never got the feeling from watching this almost from minute one that Oregon had better athletes - they didn't. Yet, they still had a real chance of winning the game.

*for those who watched Auburn all year, you had to wonder how that defense became as dominant as they did. Either that, or something was very badly wrong with Oregon's offensive scheme because at times they would allow Auburn lineman to come in completely untouched. These weren't bad blocks - they were no blocks. What sense is there in that? I know the head coach is a genius and all and had some wonderful trick plays but something was definitely off, wasn't it?

*lastly, even as an Auburn fan, the ending was borderline shocking. Granted, you had to sense that Dyer could run at will at times but who knows what really would have happened in that last drive without that - well - lucky but extremely athletic play.

On the extras, you get the trophy presentation and the post-game Auburn press conference. Wasn't much.

This is a must read for anyone interested in understanding what leadership is all about. In a profession where winning is everything and a world where loyality and tradition are no longer valued, this book chronicles what happens to a highly successful Division 1A football coach when he is no longer winning games.

This book was written before the successful 2005 season for the Penn State football program and Joe Paterno being named AP Coach of the year on his 79th Birthday! All the more reason to read.

I think this book is an inspiration for Oldies everywhere. Many people who experience what Joe Paterno went through in the Autumn of their careers, will identify with the choices that he faced when he was no longer valued and respected after a long and successful career.

In this world of Free Agency, Joe Paterno is a throw back. This book reminds us that Values, Principles, Tradition, and Loyalty are what really matter.....even in today's world.

Good Synopsis of Joe Paterno and College Football, May 12, 2006

I hesitated picking up this book because even though it was published only one year ago, it is arguably outdated since Penn State football finally bounced back and had a very good year. That said, I am glad I read it because the book goes beyond the marketed "A Season with Penn State" storyline and provides a very good historical synopsis of Joe Paterno and his role in the history of college football.

Since Paterno has been around so long, people tend to forget his importance in the development of college football. Once he retires, he will undoubtedly be remembered in the same breath as Bear Bryant, Knute Rockne, Daryl Royal, Bud Wilkinson and the other Legends (with a capital "L") of college football.

This book provides interesting insights into his personal history and the development of Penn State University, which Paterno literally transformed from a backwater agricultural school into a well-known and successful state school. I doubt any coach in college sports history has been more important to his school's development than Paterno has been to Penn State.

The parts about the actual season are fairly boring, since PSU was horrible the year Fitzpatrick followed them but it is worth picking up if you are a fan of college football history.

A Satisfying "Must Read" For Any Penn-Stater, November 16, 2005

As a Penn State freshman and one who grew up hearing of Joe Paterno only infrequently, this book was a satisfying and appropriate introduction to the living legend Head Coach of Penn State football. On the forieth anniversary of his position as Head Coach, and his 55th year as a Penn State coach, it is fitting that Fitzpatrick's book be published now.

With the Nittany Lions back in position to possibly even play in the Rose Bowl (and even if not the Rose Bowl, definitely some type of bowl game), assuming Penn State beats Michigan State this weekend to capture our second Big Ten title and Bowl Championship Series bid. With "Happy Valley" happy again and our Nittany Lions ranked #4 in the nation with what should have been a perfect 10-0 season thus far, had it not been for poor officiating in the Oct. 15 game at Michigan, this text highlights Paterno's career up to this point for anyone interested - and everyone in State College should be.

Although this is not an "official" biography and even though the author failed to secure more than one personal meeting with Paterno himself, the book is still a fascinating read due to the vast amount of background material Fitzpatrick was able to glean off various other sources and accounts.

It's a fast, fascinating and if nothing else, satisfying read. Pick up your copy now if you haven't already. Joe Paterno is still king of Penn State football, even as he turns 79 this December. It's time people got to know the man of character, morals and determination again.
