WASHINGTON (AFP) –
US First Lady Michelle Obama on Friday challenged the maxim that too many cooks spoil the broth — inviting 500 chefs to the White House to serve up a new initiative in her anti-obesity campaign.

It was a case of out of the kitchen and into the heat, as Obama gathered her guests in the blazing sunshine of the White House Rose Garden to launch a mentoring program which will see chefs adopt local schools.

Chefs will help parents and teachers educate kids about good nutrition and develop healthy menus that meet tight budgets for use

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) –
The young children of moms abused by their partners are at increased risk of being obese, a new study from Massachusetts finds.

The more often the abuse occurs, the higher the risk that pre-school children, especially girls, will be obese and, as a result, at increased risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, cancer and other illnesses later in life, the study team notes.

“It’s always sobering to see the vast impact that adversities in early life can have on long term health outcomes,” lead investigator Dr. Renee Boynton-Jarrett of Boston University School of Medicine

First lady Michelle Obama enlisted professional chefs on Friday as critical allies in helping fight the U.S. childhood obesity epidemic and making school food more nutritious and affordable.

“Each one of you has so much to offer when it comes to helping our children make healthy choices,” she told more than 500 chefs, dressed in white uniforms and chef hats and seated on the South Lawn of the White House.
